The Mission

Welcome to the Armchair Fortean!

Welcome to the Armchair Fortean!  What, exactly, is an Armchair Fortean, you ask?  Well, it’s simple, really.  The Armchair Fortean is a person who reads and watches books and documentaries about the Unknown, or Hard to Describe, or, as we’ll call it here, Weird, Spooky Stuff.  This stuff includes, but is not limited to, UFOs, Ghosts, Cryptids, Extraterrestrials, Ultraterrestrials, Archaeology, and odd occurrences in the world at large.  The practicing Armchair Fortean, however, doesn’t stop at consuming media about WSS, but, just as importantly, THINKS about it.  A good Armchair Fortean takes in all the WSS, ponders it, finds connections, approaches weirdness in order to explore phenomena, attempting to make sense of things where sense doesn’t always apply.  All from the cozy confines of a comfy chair, preferably with a beverage at hand and not too many steps from kitchen and bed.  It is, as Barton Fink once declared, ‘the life of the mind.’  However, we have no intention of ending up like Barton Fink.  No one wants a devilish John Goodman chasing them through hotel hallways.  No, if we’re going to be chased in hotels, let that hotel be the Stanley!

At launch, we’ll have two updates each week–Monday Musings, which are exactly that…thoughts about some aspect of Forteana; and on Thursdays, we’ll experience the Fortean Book Corner–reviews of both current and past tomes of Fortean Interest. Soon, I’ll be adding other Fortean goodies, but for now, just lean back in your armchair, find something to drink, and enjoy!

Welcome once again!

I was born the summer after the Mothman and the year before the Moon Landing. I've been fascinated by Forteana as long as I can remember, beginning with my brother's books on real haunted houses (Borley Rectory!), and continuing with my 3rd grade discovery of Kenneth Arnold's 1947 UFO encounter. Throughout my life, my capacity to stop, think, and wonder has only grown, and I created the Armchair Fortean for those of us who prefer a comfy chair to late night Sasquatch hunts. Never stop learning!
